Great for vegetarians!
by kaethe at Citysearch
Plenty of options for vegetarians (mostly side items, but they still make a delicious meal), and even vegans with some modification. Very tasty. Especially enjoyed the callaloo and the cornbread muffin topped with coconut. For a bigger meal, try the nachos with the Caribbean twist.
- Pros: Vegetarian-friendly
GREAT PLACE

We are frequent travelers to the Cayman Islands and our favorite restaurant is there - CHICKEN -CHICKEN! This restaurant is the closest thing to that place and it is right in Nashville. Great Food! Definitely a healthy alternative to most places!
- Pros: FOOD
- Cons: Prices

This food is amazing, but be careful because it is addicting.... 1/2 Chick All Dark + Rice & Beans. Don't forget about dessert.

Great if they'd lighten up on the salt

Calypso Cafe used to have the best lunch in the city but somebody needs to take the salt shaker away from the current chef--maybe it's me, but it's gotten VERY salty. The food was always good, always consistent, and the service is great. It?s got the occasional obnoxious, ill-mannered diner who doesn?t realize there are other people in the place with her while she screams into her cell phone, but I?m beginning to think that?s going to happen anywhere you go. What?s wrong with these people?
Anyway, Calypso Cafe?s a bit crowded at lunchtime, but they get you in and out pretty quickly. And it?s worth the wait--except on Sundays when the church people bring their fidgeting kids who should be on Ritalin but obviously aren?t.
If you go after 2PM for lunch, don?t expect the quality you get at noon?I don?t know why, but it seems to slip a bit after the lunch crowd leaves.
And please, guys, lose the salt. I haven't been there in over a year because my last two lunches were like eating the Dead Sea on top of salad greens. I'll try again in a month or so.
- Pros: Quick and tasty
- Cons: WAY too salty.
Good, healthy food at low prices--great for lunch or take-out

When I entered the staff was super-friendly and helped me with menu and ordering. The food was delicious, healthy, and plentiful. I got a chicken salad which was enough to feed 3 people and only cost ~$7. The decor is simple. Good place for lunch or takeout.
- Pros: Healthy food, friendly staff, cheap
- Cons: Use styrofoam containers...not so earth-friendly
Good food at affordable prices.

Our group of four ate at the Thompson Ln location on a Tuesday night around 8pm. We were seated quickly and the service throughout our meal was commendable. The food was great and *very* inexpensive for pretty large portion sizes. Although the menu is relatively small compared to most restaurants, the reduced number of choices probably contributed to our short wait time for our meal. I'm already planning on heading back here soon, too, probably for carry out. Yum...
- Pros: Parking, service, food quality
always awesome

We go to Calypso so often I usually recognize all the servers. I have been to the Thompson Lane location, Cool Springs and Elliston Place. They are all good, but we usually go to Thompson Lane. We often share the black bean nachos, which are awesome! They come with BBQ sauce, which I at first thought was weird, but just try it, it's great. I also love their chicken salad, it has great flavor, with pinnapple and cumin. They have another salad that is great, with chicken and a lite vinagerette. Overall, we are always happy we went, the prices are very reasonable, and the portions are big enough to share. Great side items and everyone in my family likes something there.
- Pros: great food, reasonable prices
- Cons: peak times are crowded
healthy and vegetarian friendly
by sequin_blu at Citysearch
calypso has a plethora of veggie friendly dishes to choose from. not to mention the best black beans i have ever tasted. (i'm not usually a big fan of black beans either. but these are crave worthy.) it's also great for take-out. we usually get the vegetarian family special. the only bad thing about this restaurant is it can be a bit slow at times (especially considering that most of the food is prepared in advance). but it is worth the wait.
- Pros: great food, lots of vegetarian choices
- Cons: slow service
This one's on my Top 5 list

Calypso is a very informal, fun, restaurant with great service and excellent food. Every time I go there I decide when I walk in that I'm going to try something new on the menu, but I always wind up ordering the same thing - loaded black bean nachos with rice, extra jalapenos and sauce on the side. Calypso has ruined me - any other nachos dish in any other restaurant now seems bland and boring. You need to eat them right away, though - if you order them to go, the chips get soggy and the flavors blend together too much. I've seen kids there, but not many. They do have dishes that children like, but not a huge variety. I wouldn't advise bringing a pack of kids - this is not McDonald's!
- Pros: Food, Price, Service, Very trendy place, nice murals
- Cons: parking is very tight at lunchtime
A welcome taste of the Caribbean by 100 Oaks Mall.

In Short
A casual atmosphere of counter service and self-serve drinks makes Calypso an easy place to stop for a nutritious meal that's out of the ordinary. The menu incorporates fresh flavors from the Caribbean islands with health food dishes. A meat-and-three plate includes barbecued or Jamaican-curried rotisserie chicken partnered with a choice of mustard greens or a cornbread muffin. Curry chicken salad with pineapple and raisins offers a unique twist on the tearoom version.
Consistantly good

I've been to Calypso probably 200 times now in the past few years. Out of those I've never had bad service, I have had slow service a couple of times, but not their fault. I've had 2 meals that were below average, and probably 100 I considered excelent. Their fruit tea is remarkable, the black bean & rice nachos... mmmm... very good place if you're a veggie
- Pros: service, speed, food
- Cons: lunchtime
