Uninvited dinner guests, and they didn't seem to care?!
by texville
So I haven't been to Ken's in years but went there this week on a date. Just as we were washing down our 2-4-1 beers, I noticed a "creepy crawling guy" scurry across the wall between the dinning room and kitchen. I pointed the uninvited dinner guest to the sushi chef... he then pointed it to a waitress who, rather unwillingly, dawned rubber gloves to remove it. However, it could not be found as it had escaped behind some pictures on the wall. We asked to cancel our order and our waitress had the nerve to ask why. As if insects aren't reason enough... and she made us pay for the beer?! We finished the night at Samurai, much better!
Good food, but not very clean...

I ate at Ken's last week after finding out that Taste of Tokyo (R.I.P.) shut down. The food was great, but at the end of my meal, I saw a la cucaracha on the west wall in the back room by my table. Needless to say, I didn't take my bento box leftovers home.
Great sushi; crowds can be nuts

Let me first say that the sushi gets an "A" in my book. The price was great and the food excellent! We loved the Nashville roll and the crunchy shrimp roll was great. The staff is so friendly and helpful. However, we went when there were a bunch of sorority girls there for a party and they all had to pay for each ticket separate and whine and complain about everything and it took them an hour to get out of the store when they were done. The staff took it well-along with their small tips.
It can be a bit hard to find parking on the weekends but once you do, prepare for some of the best sushi in Nashville!
- Pros: taste, wait staff
- Cons: parking, other customers
Not bad, but not great
by movingpangea
This isn't the worst or the best for Japanese in Nashville. My sushi ordered was just ok, and my friend had udon noodle soup which had a tainted water taste to it (we're big udon soup fans). The server also forgot something I ordered but I think it's because she misunderstood us.
- Cons: strange water taste
Great sushi at a great price
by AlabamaAlli
Ken's has great sushi, especially for the price. Plus ladies, the last time my friend and I were there we had two different tables buy us drinks... you can't beat that. Everyone there is very friendly and the servers can actually understand English (a definite plus!!) Simple yet delicious!
- Pros: Open friendly environment, great price
- Cons: parking can be a bit tricky
Best Philly Roll in Nashville
by cchambe
Ken's, by far, is one of the best sushi places in Nashville ? and one of the cheapest. The philly roll is the best I've had anywhere ? the perfect potion of cream cheese and salmon. They also have red bean ice cream, which is dee-lish! The staff is always very nice and they recently went smoke-free.
- Pros: Great, cheap sushi
- Cons: It's your average dive restaurant.
Disappointing if you are looking for authentic Japanese food.

We ordered the Mongolian Beef; it was accompanied with mixed vegetables, rice, and an orange. The mixed vegetables were not fresh and the beef had gristly fat throughout it. I was also disappointed in the lack of willingness on the restaurant's part to accommodate us - they were out of salmon so we asked to substitute a California roll instead of the other choices they had for their Bento Boxes; they would not substitute. The California roll had to be less expensive then the salmon that they could not offer because they ran out. We ordered the fried squid for an appetizer; it was tough. My husband lived in Japan for a time and felt that it was some of the worst Japanese food ever. Back to the drawing board to discover a good Japanese restaurant in Nashville.
- Cons: parking
Too expensive, salty and fatty
by sjmc
This place is way too expensive! I no loger get the bento boxes, they are too fatty and too salty. The sushi is good, but very expensive, and they don't use cucumbers! Since it's the only sushi place in the Vandy area, I'll go there if I am with someone, otherwise I'll get sushi at the Vandy hospital cafeteris.
- Pros: Good sushi
- Cons: Too expensive, Bento boxes too salty and meat is fatty
Decent Sushi - but a bad r..... problem!
by kbenavides
I've had great sushi and this was okay. You get what you pay for. I would of given it a 3 or 4 stars, the food wasn't bad and the service was nice. The major problem we had was during our dinner there, my wife and I saw not one, but three r.....s. I have been in the restaurant industry for many years and if you fumigate properly and monthly, it's extremly rare to have r.....s in a restaurant, even if the building is old and is not a free standing building. When the r.....s are out crawling on the wall and that the waitress can easily go up to it and removed it without running off - it's usually a sign that the r.....s are not afraid of people, That's scary! That means it's a bad r.... problem with a lack of fumigating. She and I will never eat there again. The waitress removed it and acted like it was normal with no apology - nothing. Eat somewhere else. Unless they start fumigating often and get a good rating from the city. I may consider it.
Consistent

Ken's is just the place if you consistently want good sushi at a reasonable price. There are only a handful of good sushi restaurants here and for the $$, Ken's is definitely at the top of the list. Don't go here if you're looking for a nice, romantic, dinner, but if you want great sushi in a casual atmosphere, Ken's is the place.
- Pros: Sushi, price, service
- Cons: Ambience
