Awful vegetarian food

by sstofer

We are vegetarians and were looking for a good place to eat while visiting Nashville and this was very disappointing. There were not that many options to begin with, we ended up ordering the Boca burger with sweet potatoes and rice and the black bean salad. The burger was disgusting, it tasted like it was just boiled in water or microwaved to heat it up, the sweet potatoes were fine, but the rice was crusty and out of a box. The salad consisted of canned beans, boxed rice, tomatoes, lettuce, and stale chips. Nothing was homemade or original. If you are into good food, I would suggest you steer clear of the Calypso Cafe.

Great place to go

by jdd32005

I have loved this place for years. I always get the Lucayan Salad. It is awesome. It also come with two cornbread muffins that are incredibly good. I also recommend the Black Bean Dip for an appetizer. The one on Elliston is always packed at lunch, but there are several locations throughout the city that you can try. Great restaurant.

  • Pros: Great food
  • Cons: Crowded

Top cheap eats in Nashville

by murphyjt

VERY quick service (less than 5 minutes for nearly everything). Rotisserie chicken and the salads are must-haves. Less than 10 bucks per person and you walk out full and satisfied. It's not fancy, the parking is limited, and they cram in as many people as possible during lunchtime. But they keep people coming in.

  • Pros: quick service, good value
  • Cons: parking, slightly hectic during lunch time

Amazing Veggie Dishes!

by pjs2780

I left Nashville about a year ago after spending 4 years there -- and having had many lunches/dinners/snacks at Calypso Cafe. I still miss the black bean dip (so so delicious, and a meal in itself), the Martinique Callaloo, the bean and corn salad, and the sweet potaotes. A delicious, flavorful, healthy, cheap, friendly dining option! Nashville is lucky to have this place!

Food Posioning

by blue27

A couple of friends of mine had raved about this place. I ate here last Sat. w/them, and started to feel ill about an hour or two after eating there. I had the Lucayan Salad....which tasted okay. I have barely eaten in the past few days and I am still feeling the effects of this. Obviously, I would not go back.

The Aruban Sauce is all I want in life

by thepriceiswrong

Quite possibly gods gift to Nashville. This restaurant is perfection. The food is orignal, the service is great and the prices are so cheap its criminal. The have a line of sauces that you can take home in mass, my favorite is the Aruban sauce, but also try the J erk Sauce. Black Bean Dip is my favorite appitizer. 2 people could eat there for under $15. Even though its a local chain, this location seems to have something special in the staff. If you are going for lunch during the week days, get there early or dont go there hungry, seating is limited and there is always line by 11:30am.

  • Pros: Price, Food, Sauces, EVERYTHING!
  • Cons: seating is limited and its VERY popular lunch place

Casual Caribbean hangout serves signature rotisserie chicken to business types and families.

by Contributor

In Short
At lunchtime, a mostly female working crowd congregates for lunch, but in the evening, young families dominate the scene. The menu builds on the signature rotisserie chicken with a choice of two sauces, black beans, sides and salads. Sweet and spicy flavors permeate everything; even the corn bread and turnip greens are sweet. Healthier options are also available, including skinless chicken, fat-free barbecue sauces and low-fat salad dressings.

Absolutely the best food for the money.

My husband and I have been going to Calypso about once a week for years. We love the black bean salads, the chicken sandwich, the muffins- just about everything! The service is quick and friendly, the ambience is comfortable, and the price is great.

Don't come for a romantic night out, but for any other night, this is the place to go.

When I think about my favorite places in Nashville, Calypso is one of them.

Always disappoints...

by williamsoncounty

A tiny, tasty wood-grilled chicken breast accompanies a tablespoon of cooked rice and two hard-as-a-brick corn muffins. Why do I go back once a year? Because everyone is wild about the place.

  • Pros: Jerk sauce
  • Cons: Value, Portion size, "corn pucks"

I've eaten at the location in Cool Springs and the location on Thompson Way - both are good. Better servings at the Thompson Way location. Better service at the Cool Springs Location. This is one of the RARE places for dining out where one can obtain a healthy meal - not fried - not salted to death; just good healthy food and spicy is nice. I would recommend Calpyso Cafe to anyone who wants to stay healthy, feeling good and get a good value for their dollar.

  • Pros: Healthy, Pleasant Atmosphere, Helpful Staff
