I have been to Shogun about 15 times and it has never disappointed me. The negative reviews seem to focus on poor management, which very well may be true if you are demanding precise seating on a weekend evening, but the food is to die for. For people who like a mouth full of flavor and zest, it's hard to find any other restaurant that would have more flavor. I can't believe some reviews said their food was cold....it's straight off the grill!!! How could it be served cold?!!? The fried rice alone could be a meal, it's comparable to PF Chang's except with more of a teriaki flavor. I wish I could take the sauces home somehow.... especially the hot sauce (by request). It has the most unique form of heat but doesn't burn or scorch your mouth like a jalepeno. For people that complain the the chef "seems out of it," it's because they will do as little or as much entertaining as you want them to. Sometimes regulars like myself have seen the show tons of times and you'd rather just talk with your company. The chef will pick up on that and just make the food for you. But if you cheer them on and show interest in their show, then they'll do more. I think that's very professional of them to perceive what the customers want during the meal, apparently misinterpreted as being boring or indifferent by some.

For $17 or so you can get a salad (with amazing ginger dressing!), soup, shrimp appetizer, half a plate of fried rice, vegetables, steak/chicken, side sauces, and spumoni ice cream! Plus alot of entertainment, food tricks, and fire flareups, it's almost like a mini Vegas dinner show. The chefs I've had always have a clever sense of humor if you engage them. They'll even try to flip you a piece of food and let you catch it in your mouth (followed by jokingly flipping a huge chunk of butter for you to catch in your mouth!).

Shogun will easily become a family favorite that you will crave fortnightly!

  • Pros: Hot food, fun entertaining chefs, very bold and zesty tastes, tons of food for $17
  • Cons: very busy on weekends, as they have to wait to seat 10 at a time per chef. Best on weekdays.

This was my first experience at a Japanese hibachi restaurant in Nashville. In Knoxville, I was apparantly spoiled by Miyabi's and Kanpai of Tokyo, as Shogun's wasn't even in their league. We were told there would only be a 15 min wait so to pass the time we went to the bar to have a drink. The bar area was in general not clean and seemed very unkept and the bartender seemed irritated that we wanted a drink. While I was trying to decide what to order, I noticed her sneaking a smoke from a cigarette she had hidden in a customer's ash tray. Now, its bad enough to deal with the general public smoking but to have to deal with my bartender taking a puff like a school girl in the bathroom was just trashy. I skipped my drink and my date had sake, hard to mess that up. We were set in a nice timely manner as promised and most things were good after that. At the table we sat with 8 other people we didn't know at first but proceeded to talk with everyone. I ordered a extra extra dirty vodka martini on the rocks and my date ordered a cosmo, both off the drink menu (I did ask for an additional extra dirty). When we got the drinks they were terrible. My martini had zero olive juice and it even says dirty in the menu description and the only thing about my date's drink that resembled a cosmo was the color. I asked for some olive jucie and doctored mine while my date just suffered thru it. After that the food was good, not great, and the cook (or is it chef?) was pleasant and entertaining. He was very skilled at his job and his server assistant was on top of her game as well. The sauces they give for the food were not very tasty so we pushed ours aside. The food was prepared properly and the meat was good but the rice was dry and the vegetables in the rice seemed like they were out of a can. Now to the bill. As I reviewed our bill I realized we were not charged for our bar drinks and the party beside us was charged for 2 meals instead of 4, so I guess we got redeemed ;-)

  • Pros: Chef performance, table conversation
  • Cons: bar area, bartender, lack of ambience

We ate at Shogun in Cool Spring last night and chose the restaurant due to the location. We also were looking for a fun, boisterous place to gather and eat. It was boisterous and there was a large crowd waiting to be seated -- so we thought we had made the right decision. We were told that the wait for a table was only about 30 minutes -- with such a large crowd waiting in the foyer, we were pleasantly surprised. We quickly figured out why. We sat in the bar, away from the crowded foyer and ordered drinks. The bartender was nice but very, very slow with our first round of drinks and he only had about six customers in the bar. We were seated in the time we were told and proceeded to order. Our chef showed up and while he did do the prerequisite "hibachi" style moves -- he just didn't seem too excited to be there. He also rushed through the entire cooking "process" -- undercooking the shrimp, rushing just about everything. The rice was good but dry and our filet was tender. The sauces provided just seemed bland and they actually tasted the same -- one was just darker than the other. We also ordered a round of drinks at our table and had to remind the server helping out that we had not received them. Now, I consider myself an EXPERT on Japanese food. We have eaten at the Mikado off of Harding/I-24 for over 10 years and are considered regulars there. We would have chosen Mikado but our party wanted something close to the Cool Springs area. We have tried Omigashi, now Shogun and Miyaki in Nippers Corner and I can say that we will never stray away from the Mikado again. If Cool Springs is the location for our next gathering, we will pick another place besides Shogun. Service mediocre, food undercooked or dry (steak was good though), sauces and salad dressing are the same, bland concoction and bartender slow. While it wasn't a terrible experience, the food and service were just okay. I just wouldn't recommend it to those who love Japanese food.

  • Pros: Prompt seating, loud and boisterous for groups, tender steak, rice good but dry
  • Cons: Parking, service, sauces, bland food, bar service slow, rushed service/dining

I absolutely love Shogun. The food is great, I can always count on a good meal when I come here. The Filet and shrimp are my absolute favorite. The atmosphere is great for a big group that want to enjoy a unique dinning experiance. Great place for kids, however, not if children are picky eaters, cause it can get expensive. The chefs are great, very friendly and love the interact with their audiance. It's more than going out to eat, it is an enterntaining experiance.

  • Pros: Great food, service, and entertainment
  • Cons: NONE

I was dissapointed with the service that myself and my dinner party received at this restaurant recently. The staff members were quite rude and not appreciative of the fact that customers have a choice when going to a restaurant for dinner. The "manager" and hostess was very snobby. This was my first time at this restaurant and had a dinner party of about 8 people. I politely asked if there were private rooms available in which to dine and was flatly and rudely told no. I knew that this was untrue being that a friend who lives in Brentwood has enjoyed the private room. I didn't try to name drop to get better service being that my husband is a prominant player with the Indianapolis Colts. I enjoy being treated with respect and kindness without having to do that. After basically being told to take it or leave it and rushed to make a decision of whether or not to stay i decided to leave. My husband was just entering the restaurant and all of a sudden the scene changed. Once the staff recognized my husband they all of a sudden had a private room available. Imagine that! The damage was done and we went to Omikoshi. The staff was wonderful and so so kind. The chef was very entertaining and everyone was so polite. I would definately go back to Omikoshi when I'm in town again!!!

  • Pros: rude staff members, dishonest toward customers
  • Cons: none

I was very dissatisfied with the service at Shogun, I have been to this restaurant several times but chose to ignore the things that weren't so great until tonight. The food was cold and looked like it had been sitting out for a long time. On this occasion we chose to not enjoy the Hibachi grill and i assume they use leftover food because when I commented that I was unhappy with the food temperature, etc and didn't want it the manager angrily removed the shrimp that I had touched and threw it on the table while removing the food as though he would serve the food to another customer later . The manager was very rude and had he simply shown some concern for my unhappiness I wouldn't have had a problem. There were several incidents of mediocre customer service. If I'm paying 100.00 for a dinner for two I expect the food to be hot.

  • Cons: average food, bad customer service

I wasn't impressed with the food. The place was crowded and the service was below par. I enjoyed the drinks, however they were over priced.

In Short
Shogun offers the thrill and tranquility of Japanese dining all under one roof. Twenty hibachi tables that seat 10 people each host performances of chopping and dicing. Each hibachi dinner comes with a grilled jumbo shrimp appetizer, soup, vegetables, fried rice, salad and green tea. In a separate wing, sushi lovers will find a spacious sushi bar and tatami room, sealed off for privacy.

My dining experience at Shogun was terrible. We received all of our food items (soup, salad, shrimp appetizer, etc) all at the same time. We were terribly rushed as if they had something better to do, even though it was 2 hours before closing time. Our waitress even brought our ice cream out while were still eating our food, disregarding the fact that we could not eat it yet. Plus, the food was just mediocre. Once we complained about the horrible service, the manager replied with, "Pay your bill and get out." If you want to be treated like dirt, go to Shogun. Otherwise, go to Kobe steakhouse, it's 10 times better.

  • Pros: Ambiance
  • Cons: , Mediocre food, Too expensive
