Health Code
by jb1949
I have tried to post this twice, funny how it never shows. Kinda like how the McDougal brothers paid their way outta trouble when they got booted from BA. I guess money can do wonders. Anyways, the coop got a 42 or 45 health score which is basically the worst you can get. With chicken?, that is really not safe. To be honest that score is so low, I can't imagine how they got that scores. They were shut down for it. They also got shut down for codes violations by putting basically a mobile home by their place. And people trust them with their food, ha ha!
Best chicken fingers in Nasvhille
by Vandybro
Do not listen to the angry reviewers that have reviewed this restaurant recently. Let me address some issues that normal and sane reviewers on here might understand and find useful about McDougal's. Yes, McDougal's HAD a low health code rating. For how long? Less than a week. It's been a B+ for months now (higher than Nasvhille's average). For those who keep complaining about service speed, this isn't McDonald's. Nor is it supposed to be slow enough to get your food in less than 5 minutes on Friday during lunch rush (who actually expects this!?). The size of the building should be a good indication that this restaurant can't support a lot of people. However, they just added a new seating area that can house another 20 people. Is service slow, sometimes? Ya, but it's busy because McDougal's is a popular place, not because the workers are lazy (as some have said on this site). McDougal's is still the best chicken finger restaurant in Nashville. Food is still excellent. The chicken is still as succulent and juicy as it was years ago. The service is as quick as it can be. Two registers and a maximum staff of 5 or 6. These guys are doing the best they can, and are doing a great job. The servers are always friendly. The fact of the matter is: this place deserves 5 stars. Any opinion on the contrary is simply outrageous.
- Pros: Food, atmosphere
- Cons: NONE
Have been going there for quite sometime, things looked as if it would improve ,service was better, food was better.however went in today for lunch and it was a cluster*****

had to wait 15 minutes in line, no one greeted me, everyone looked lost, i think the owner was there and he looked like he was just in the way, he probally should have went back home. any way have been going here for about 5 months and every thing was great, looks like OTTER'S will be getting my business fron now on. heck i might even stoop down to KFC they have about the same customer service
- Pros: have a good product
- Cons: need professional mangers not ,college kids
After seeing their health score, I will never eat here again!
by urbannashville
I recently saw the health ratings for restaurants on the news and McDougals scored a 45 out of 100 which is scary! I will never eat here again after seeing that they store their food items at unsafe temperatures...be careful!

Awesome Chicken and Great Atmophere
by BoBigRed
I heard about this place from an interview Matt Wertz gave a long time ago. If you haven't checked out his music do yourself a favor and go to mattwertz dot com. .
Anyways, I always told myself if I ever go to Nashville I'd check it out. Well, I finally made it to Nashville a couple of months ago and stopped by for some chicken. Wow! What an awesome place! I read a few previous reviews that said the place has changed a little and I bet it was even better then, but it's still awesome! I loved the fact they sold beer too. I can't blame the previous poster for saying that he wished they still sold buckets. I bet that place would be packed on game days. What's better than chicken and berr?
The atmophere was great and there was an old school picture of a bunch of Phi Delts to boot! How cool is that?
The chicken is awesome! The sauce reminded me of Canes sauce, but I love that stuff so that's a plus and they give you FREE ice cream. If you get a chance definitely stop by and have some chicken for me! When I go back I'm definitely hitting them up again!!!
- Pros: Atmophere and Food
Best Chicken Place in Nashville, nay, the WORLD
by Benpatient2
I must say, user cokewithvanilla must be talking about a different place. The large basket (5 tenders with fries, texas toast AND a coke, PLUS free ice cream) is $9.64 with tax. I should know, I've had one 2x a week for the last 6 months or more. I keep trying to stop going to McDougal's, but I just can't shake the habit. I have never had a craving for any restaurant's food before for such a long time. Otters costs more and the chicken has obviously been frozen before. McDougal's has the best variety of excellent-tasting sauces I've ever encountered, and they are all free (unlike Otters).
The chicken tenders are the star of the show, as they should be. Get the breaded ones because the breading is light and wonderful. The Salads and Wings are good, but overpriced in my opinion. I only get those things when I am worried that I've had too many chicken tenders lately. Staff is super-nice and helpful. They will clean up after you even though it is a self-serve type of place. I consider myself a chicken snob. I won't eat frozen chicken or overcooked chicken at a restaurant, and I only buy organic free-range stuff at the grocery store. So I'm not really sure what cokewithvanilla is talking about with the taste of their chicken. Of course the fried chicken with french fries isn't healthy! It's all FRIED. It's tender, juicy, well-seasoned and made fresh to order. It's one of the most beautiful casual eating experiences you could have. Fries are fresh-cut every day from good potatoes. This place is putting the Nashville Otter's locations out of business. The free ice cream is even good!
Try it at either location (Belcourt or Cool Springs) and discover some of the best chicken tenders money can buy. The atmosphere is fun, too.
- Pros: Excellent food, super-fresh, 10 different free sauces, free ice cream, excellent staff
- Cons: salads are too expensive, as are the wings
Greasy as can be, doesn't taste bad though, very expensive
by cokewithvanilla
When I visit McDougal?s I generally order either grilled chicken strips or fried chicken strips. I have also tried their wings and fries. I would have to say, although their sauces are very good (especially the BBQ and Gold), their chicken does not taste good for a chicken place. Jonathan?s has better chicken, and its a bar. My biggest problem with McDougal?s is the grease. I have ordered GRILLED chicken to go, and in the box was a pool of grease. On top of paying 7+ dollars for 5 pieces of chicken, I had to wipe them off with napkins before eating them. This is their grilled chicken, mind you. Their wings are also overpriced, as are their fries which are almost 4 dollars. Bottom line: Good sauce, but greasy and expensive. Of course, expensive is a relative term. A meal with fries and a drink will likely cost around 12-15 dollars.
- Pros: good sauce
- Cons: greasy, expensive food.
Best chicken in town!
by oconnell80
Who ever wrote that last review has no clue. Ask anyone, the vandi card has caused nothing but problems with local business. Even the college has stopped accepting applicants for the card because of the difficulties associated with its use. And as far as charging for extra pickles...ever heard of keeping the doors open? Do you really think that that company makes a ton on money? Your not shopping at Walmart, hello! These people don't make a million a year! There are more costs associated with running a business than you could even know...but you'll find that all out when you enter the real world; until then I guess mommy and daddy will continue to pay your bills.
For those who really want a great, causual place to hang out with friends, or enjoy and afternoon with your family, this is it. I would have died to have a place like this in college.
- Pros: Great chikcen, fun staff, great with kids!!
- Cons: None, love it all!
Sell-Out
by purpleperson16
McDougals has SOLD-OUT. i started going here my sophmore year and in the short amount of time I have been frequenting the resturant it has vastly changed. The neighborhood spot, or college joint has started to look more like apple-bees then the fun eclectic shack it used to have. Gone are the rolls of papertowels in the middle of the table. This is just one example. The staff is easily stressed. The feeling you once got going to mcdougals is no longer there. The air is just different. They also used to take a Vanderbilt Campus card which was great, but stopped. As a business man/woman I do not know how the owners thought this was a good idea. Ask any vandy student and they will usually eat at a place that takes the card.
- Pros: Good Chicken fingers
- Cons: They charge for all extras (even pickles) SELL OUT
