More trendy than tasty
by movingpangea at Citysearch
They don't have fountain drinks, just canned sodas. The music seems like it would be more fitting for a young girl's clothing store than a restaurant. The sushi is no where close to Wild Wasabi, Koto's or Sam's. I prefer quality to quantity.
- Pros: location
- Cons: no fountain drinks, annoying music, weird atmosphere
Best Sushi EVER!
by stfujesska at Citysearch
I held Rusan's to very high standards because Nashville Scene readers rated them #1 Sushi Bar, and I had read many rave reviews about them, but one thing that didn't dawn on me was though they were rated #1 for the food, food does not include customer service in the rating.
Once in the restaurant, there was no host/hostess. Fortunately the bartender wasn't too occupied and spoke to us and said it would be about 10 minutes, but it took that amount of time for us to be greeted by anyone to be seated. Once we were seated, it took about 20 minutes for the waiter to come around and ask us what we wanted. I didn't even know they had Coke products to offer, but I guess that's what I get for not asking. The sushi tasted amazing! Their sushi is the best I have ever tasted. They also have a great selection with great price ranges too! It was my friend's birthday and she had a "Happy Birthday" balloon tied onto the back of her chair, and without even telling or mentioning to the waiter it was her birthday, he just brought her out dessert and sung her happy birthday (free of charge).
though the customer service wasn't that great, the food was amazing!
- Pros: food, trendy area, nice setting
- Cons: service
Closing Times
by DowntownGirl8 at Citysearch
On Saturday, September 20th, my finance and I went to Ru San's at 11:20pm and we were told by a server that they were closed. We stated that the door said that the closing time was midnight, and the server told us that business was slow that evening and they closed early. Although the front tables in the window were empty and dirty, the back of the resturant was full of people. The bartender did say to the server that the open sign was still on, the server did not respond. We even offered to get our order to go, and the server refused to take the order. He stated to us that it was late and "people have kids they are trying to get home to." We left, and the open sign was still "on". Needless to say we were very disappointed, we often eat at this resturant and enjoy it. And we do understand if we came in at 10 minutes before closing, that this server would be upset, but coming in 40 minutes before and being denied even a takeout order, just did not seem the right thing to do. My suggestion would be make sure you go early, apparently people that work there children stay up until after midnight waiting for them to come home!
- Pros: Good food
- Cons: Service is unpredictable
sometimes less is more...

We went on a "double date" during the week based on a friend-of-a-friend's recommendation. The style was a fairly standard urbanish feel and the music was a little too loud. If you like a lot of choices and you're not picky, looking through their extensive menu(s) might be a good time...but since I know what I like, and couldn't find it amongst the 500 options, I tried to describe it to the waitress...but she was way to slammed to give personalized service (it took us over 15 minutes to get greeted.) The staff smiled and was polite, but we weren't wowed by any aspect of it. Its probably better suited to a group of friends who are easy to please and love sharing to try new things. I'm pretty picky, so check it out and, prove me wrong, and then talk about how cranky the girl who wrote the review must be;)
- Pros: selection, relaxed style, trendy
- Cons: too much selection, loud, very slow service
Eat and Be Wary

I went to this restaurant for the first time tonight. I will probably not return. The Flying Kamikazi Maki was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. The Banana Boat Maki was gross. The rolls fell apart, so it was hard to get the full taste. Be careful with what you order at this place because if you order something you don't like, you still have to pay for it and you can not order anything else in its place...restaurant policy. When it comes to sushi, I'll stick to Virago and Sonobana.
- Pros: Quick service
- Cons: Quality of food
Warm sushi, loud, and so-so service
by wingscapes at Citysearch
We enter Rusan's to see it is best of citysearch 2007 and I immediately think we are in for a treat. My wife and I have been looking for a good sushi place but have been dissapointed with the selection in nashville. As we walked to the back of the restaurant some of the cooks were speaking lewdly about my wife which got under my skin a little. The service was fast but not great. The sushi I ordered was really good...I think it was number 49...twice smoked salmon. Unfortunately the rest was mediocre. For a trendy atmosphere, loud techno, and so-so sushi try Rusan's, but as for me I will keep looking for good sushi.
This is a sushi town.

I have been to this restaurant several times. In fact I was very pleased when it opened because it was so distinctive and the food was very good. Ah, the good old days!
Because there are so many good sushi bars, it is ironic that I never ordered sushi there. Instead I ordered grilled dishes and delighted in the variety.
But each time I went back the grilled dishes suffered, most notably from gumminess of the sauce to plate presentations that differed radically on each visit. Once I had a hard time determining if in fact I had gotten the dish I had ordered.
That fact and the presence of a large "saki bomb" contingent has forced Rusan's to the bottom of my dining options list.
- Pros: Ambience
- Cons: Ambience
My favorite restaurant in Nashville!
by eone at Citysearch
I have been to Rusan's many times and enjoy it more and more each time I go. This is a great place to take your business clients for the lunch buffet. In the evening the atmosphere is fun and an experience in itself. I have found the staff to be quite friendly and the food is amazing. This is a great place to come and enjoy some great food and unwind. You must go there for the best calamari in town! It is also on the lunch buffet. The menu is unbelievable as they offer everything you can imagine. The sushi chefs and cooks are fun to just sit and watch. You will leave here full and relaxed! My favorite restaurant in Nashville!
- Pros: Food and atmosphere
- Cons: none
Need to Label Food
by willowbird35 at Citysearch
Not a very roomy restaurant and loud at lunchtime and crowded. For what I ate, it was good but I am allergic to shellfish and nothing was labeled, so I was afraid to try a lot of things for fear it had shellfish in it!. The waiters are not plentiful, so you cannot ask them what anything is. I am a picky eater so this restaurant was not on my top list of choices, but don't listen to me...business looks great for these folks, so obviously they are doing something right! My only complaint is the lack of labeling what each item is and what ingredients are in it.
- Pros: Affordable, offers lunch menu at lower prices than dinner
- Cons: crowded, service is lacking, doesn't have many of "the usual" items I like on the menu
Problems in Paradise
by nopking at Citysearch
I used to say this was the best on the planet. I've had roughly 1 out of 3 experiences lately at Rusans that I thought were so below average I did not go back for months. The food is always good, but the service has fluctuated from pretty good to damned awful. Have been there times where others would order food and I would receive mine half an hour later, once was stuck for 24 minutes trying to pay and leave, I'd say I've blown 10 hours of my life in 2005 in Rusans waiting for food or my credit card back. But when it's good, it's all good. They had it, they lost it, they need it back...
- Pros: food, atmosphere, value
- Cons: inconsistant service, explanation of bills, time spent waiting
