Worst restaurant we have ever been to!

by A Doria

This is by far the worst restaurant we have ever been to. It is dark, filthy and the food is little better than pig slop at prices fit for a king. Calling this a 'German restaurant' is an insult beyond description to the excellent German cuisine. The present owners are obviously not German. They evidently hate German food traditions with a passion. It is a riddle why the city of Nashville does not close them down. This place is not only an insult to German food but it is also an insult to the wonderful city of Nashville. Before you go to the place, please read all of the reviews, particularly the negative ones that talk about the defects of the various, pathetically poorly prepared dishes. Do you want to pay for these insults with your perfectly good money?

  • Pros: The bottled beer was not warm.
  • Cons: The place is dark, filthy, the food is 'soup kitchen'.

Drive from Memphis for Lunch

by HoneyLove

My Memphis family has been eating at Nashville's Gerst Haus since the 80's when they were in another location. We fondly remember the funny bathroom with the maze of hallways and three steps up to the toilet. The new location is so much better, not fancy, just comfortable. My sister and I make several trips a year just for lunch. The stroganoff is my favorite but the Berlinger Met is a close second. I usually get both then tote the rest home in a container I always bring with me. I'm normally not a beer drinker but I love the fishbowl Gerst beer. Love the cornbread cakes. Tried the Kraut Ball. Once was enough. I hear they have great hamburgers but I can never pass by my favorites to try one. We have never had a problem with service or our billing. We have found the wait staff to be very accommodating. I agree with the previous wirter, if you want fast food go to McDonalds. We will be seeing you soon Gerst Haus.

  • Pros: Large portions of good food
  • Cons: It's not in Memphis

Read reviews - so I checked my billing

by Prev

I read the reviews indicating diners had been overcharged, so I checked my statement. An additional $2.00 was added to the charge. While this is a small amount, we will never go back.

  • Cons: Credit card over charged

Prepare for indigestion

by jijip1011

The Gerst House is an eclectic dump - part lodge, part shabby cafeteria with christmas decorations still up in July - tacky . The food is pricey although you get a large portion, presentation mirrors the ambiance - second rate. All three people in our party had terrible indigestion after eating there. The beer, however, is cheap and served in a nice frosty mug. Go for that and sit at the bar - skip the high priced industrial feel fare.

  • Pros: cold beer mugs
  • Cons: unremarkable preentation and poor atmosphere

Great Food - Service a Little Slow

by susan1116

We have eaten at Gerst Haus on several occassions. The food is really great and you get generous portions. Last time we went there was a polka band, we really enjoyed the listening to the music. The down side was the service was very slow. After about 15 minutes we finally complained about not getting waited on. Luckily the band kept us entertained while we waited. Would recommend as long as you are not in a hurry.

  • Pros: Great Food, Big Portions, Great Polka Band
  • Cons: A little pricey, location is difficult to get too

Gerst CCs

by jonitn

For the user, bionici, who wrote the review about the credit cards...My family owns the gerst and I took off the extra tip authorization. I am sorry that happened to you. I thought I had taken that off a long time ago, but I obviously didn't. I hope you will come back and eat with us. It should not happen again.

Great food, great atmosphere, and the kids were entertained

by berbbm

I don't know what all the bad reviews are about. We had great service and great food. If you thought it was gonna be cheap your an idiot. You should have gone to McDonalds if you wanted cheap food. The polka band was awesome and the 3 small children in our party we very entertained by them. I can't wait for my next trip to Nashville so I can go again.

  • Pros: Authentic food, Polka band, Kept children happy
  • Cons: Frozen beer mugs made table very wet

FOOD - OK, but watch out for the service staff or restaurant to bill more than what you paid.

by bionici

Very specifically, the food was good & in larger portions. However, I've had better sauerbraten. The waitress provided OK service. I added a 15% tip to the total bill (food, drink, and taxes), and used my debit card. When I checked the bank website the next morning, an exact 22% tip had been added. I called the restaurant, and was told by the manager that this was a normal practice for the bank to pend a larger amount to the account, and it would be corrected in a couple of days. I immediately called the bank, since I knew that this was not true, and the bank confirmed that they would ONLY bill my account for the amount that the restaurant had submitted. I WILL NOT be going back to a restaurant in which the service staff dishonestly adds additional funds to the bill.

  • Pros: Food OK, but typically American-German
  • Cons: Watch out for service staff that may bill you more on your debit card after you leave

twice the price for half the quality

by nyx976

I love German food and agreed to go to Gerst Haus to meet up with some friends who had never had authentic German food. Normally, I have to drive to Clarksville because Madison St. International Cafe has the only good German meals so I was happy to try a restaurant that was closer. Well, the service was horrible,. It took close to 10 minutes just to get our beer and after almost an hour we finally got our food. It was half the portion and quality of what I get in Clarksville and over twice the price. The next day I took my friends to Madison St. Cafe and got the Jager Schnitzel dinner special for $6.99 and they loved it...the only down side, they don't carry beer.

  • Pros: They have beer
  • Cons: the beer is the only good thing that they carry

German Food in Nashville

by mrneeze

Although I don't work downtown nor frequent their restaurants, I've found on the three occasions I've eaten lunch at the Gerst Haus (over the past four months) that it has had consistently good food and service. It won't ever be a Berghoff (Chicago) or Hofbrauhaus (Newport, KY), but then Nashville probably has 10 times more Vietnamese than Germans. If you need a German fix, I would recommend this restaurant, or stay at home and cook it.

  • Pros: food, service & parking
  • Cons: access off interstate
