What People Are Saying About Sunset Grill

In Short – As the premier restaurant in trendy Hillsboro Village, Sunset Grill caters to a diverse clientele of Music Row executives with their celebrity clients and a hip, late-night rocker crowd. Dining areas include an indoor and outdoor patio, a main dining room with candlelight and crisp white tablecloths and a cozy bar. The lengthy wine list is a strong selling point, as is the inventive seasonal menu with an eight-ounce Kobe burger and ahi with lentils.

Editor's Tips

The Extras:
Don't be shy about ordering bottles of wine that you may not finish. The restaurant will re-cork your unfinished bottle for you to take away.
Where to Sit:
See and be seen at table 84 in the center of the covered patio by the retractable window.
Save Money:
Ask about "closeout wines." The restaurant usually liquidates its overflow stock at half-price.
Know Before You Go:
With advance notice, they are able to accomodate vegetarian and other special dietary requests.
Late Night Dining:
The late-night menu features many selections from the main dinner menu--only at one-half or one-third the price.
Valet Parking:
Complimentary valet parking is available.

Best new menu in town

by racheleb at Citysearch

I have been a frequenter of Sunset Grill for almost 2 decades, and although it has always been one of my favorites, 2009 and 2010 have been some of the most exciting years to go. After years of the same things on the menu, there has finally been a huge change after Chris Cunningham stepped in and took over back in October. Although your favorite classics, such as the voodoo pasta and the sunset caesar are still there for some people's liking, the rest of the menu has been totally revamped, bringing in an explosion of different cultures and tastes. It doesn't matter how picky anyone may be in your dinner party, there is something on the menu to perk up their tastebuds, such as the lamb kefta appetizer or the new trout "BLT". There is also always a full menu of fresh specials that change weekly based upon what's coming in locally. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is local or visiting. If you haven't visited in awhile, swing by and check out the new menu. It's definitely worth a visit!

  • Pros: something for everyone on the menu
  • Cons: leaving too full

A Diamond in the Rough

by Rifftheman at Citysearch

We always stop in Nashville on our way to IU in Bloomington. We were very fortunate to eat at The Sunset Grill last November. What a pleasant surprise!

For a college town, it was very classy, yet "cool" and had very delicious food. The service was extremely competent and hospitable. We are from Atlanta, Ga and have many very good restaurants in our town. The Sunset Grill will definitely be a frequented place on our way to visit our kids at IU. Do not miss this "diamond -in -the rough. Enjoy

  • Pros: Great food, great people, great place
  • Cons: Hard to find if you are an "out-of-towner"

VERY mediocre

by NashvilleNative75 at Citysearch

As a Nashville native, as well as someone who loves to travel and eat great food wherever I go, trust me on this one: skip the Sunset Grill. This is a dinosaur of a restaurant. The menu has not changed in 10 years, and the wine list is unimpresive and equally dated. The food itself is average, at best - and certainly not worth the price paid.

The Sunset Grill comes from a bygone era in Nashville dining, and can not compete with the many other, BETTER restaurants that are populating our fine city. The Sunset refuses to update their menu, and refuses to embrace culinary change of any sort. And perhaps more importantly, the food is uninspired, uninteresting, lackluster, and overall pretty terrible. It's kind of sad, but in the same vein, if they can't grow or move forward then they deserve the dwindling business they've been getting.

Also to note, this place is popular with two types of Nashvillians: Vanderbilt sorority & frat types who think it's posh based solely on its location, and who really don't have any discriminating culinary tastes of their own, and the geriatric Belle Meade crowd. And that's it.

Don't spend your time or money on this dying waste of good real estate.

  • Pros: Location
  • Cons: Dated menu, dated wine list, mediocre food

Venerable Classic Still Kicking

by bjaneg13 at Citysearch

My boyfriend and I had dinner here last week with our parents. We had a great server - who knew the menu and offered great suggestions. We all ordered a starter plus an entree. Everyone was impressed by the starters - sonoma salad, summer salad of cucumbers and tomatoes, scallops. The main entree's were decent - lamb was tasty, pork tenderloin was yummy, vegetarian loved her stuffed pepper, etc.

All in all, I would recommend Sunset to anyone. It's not some fancy new place in town, but rather a classic that's been here for a while and will more than likely stay around for a while. While the food might not be on the cutting edge, it's good portions and tasty.

The patio is the place to be in great weather...

  • Pros: Wine specials, patio, late night menu
  • Cons: Patio Chairs

What a deal!

by Sunnydale at Citysearch

Two of us tried the Prime Grillin specials...what a deal! The steaks were cooked to perfection, and I would definitely recommend the shrimp scampi side. The wine sale is awsome--by the glass or bottle. We will definitely be back for more!

  • Pros: Fantastic steaks at a steal
  • Cons: No room for dessert
