What People Are Saying About South Street

In Short – A breeze reminiscent of spring break on the Redneck Riviera blows in through rolled-up garage door windows both upstairs and down at this restaurant decorated like a treehouse. The menu offers gritty Gulf Coast cuisine designed to cure the munchies. Oysters are cold, fresh and straight from Louisiana. The diverdillas--open-face tortillas--are deliciously and deceptively akin to thin-crust pizza. Side items include slaw, white beans and Cuban corn, while one dessert offering is a made-fresh nutty buddy.

- Know Before You Go:
- This rockin' venue also offers lighter fare. Ask for the skinny pig or the veggie garden burger on wheat bread.
Bloated prices for average fare
by tochtli83 at Citysearch
I should preface by saying that I've only eaten here twice. Sadly, both times the food was average and the prices were high.
The most recent visit, this past Sunday, some friends and I dropped in for brunch. They serve the full menu, plus some brunch-specific items. Since I was in the mood for actual brunch, I ordered an omelette, which was supposed to come with assorted sides. When I made the order, the waiter asked if I wanted the sides? Why would I not? He presented it as if they cost extra, but then later admitted that they came with the meal. Confused??
The food and drinks arrived. For my meal, the biscuits were supposed to come with jelly: none included and the waiter was nowhere to be found, despite low volume in the restaurant. The omelette had several shells in it. Not even remotely appealing. Then, after drinking half of my beer, I noticed a long black hair sticking to the side of the glass. Disgusting. Also, the bathrooms were filthy.
Some of this is forgivable, but most is not. It the food were like $6, I might forgive it. But for $12 an omelette, and $6 for a draft beer, I would expect better quality and service. The truth is, the food just isn't that good. It's like eating at TGI Fridays, but with worse service, filthier accommodations, and higher prices. If you think their BBQ is good, you have never had good BBQ. If you think their prices are fair, then keep supporting them, because I won't.
Use to have great food

South Street use to be a great restaurant, but the food has taken a drastic change for the worse. We went there on a Friday night (9/3/10), and ordered several dinners. There were six people in our party and when we received our food, it was cold. I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone again. I can say the best thing about that night was our waitress. If it wasn't for her pleasing attitude the experience would have been terrible.
Fun place to be

South Street is my favorite restaurant in Nashville. Food is great. They have great baked fish dishes, if you want to eat healthy and their bread pudding, best I've EVER had.
Service is great ESPECIALLY if you should get Carla or Robin's table!!
I celebrate most of my special occasions there, it's just a FUN PLACE TO BE!!
Poor Service, long wait times

Really poor service....by multiple people. Also, it's very difficult to get a waiter's attention. It's sad because there's so much going for this restaurant.
- Pros: Good location
- Cons: Poor service, long wait times
South Street Rocks!

I live in Chicago and I visit this place every time I am in Nashville. Went again this weekend and as usual our party had a GREAT time. Be sure to sit upstairs for a really great experience. The staff there are great, attentive and the food is fabulous. Stick with the barbeque and oysters and you can't go wrong.
Some of Nashville's Country Music finest are likely to visit this establishment from time to time. We ran into one during our visit over the weekend. Another awesome experience at South Street!
- Pros: Barbeque, Oysters, Atmosphere, Fun, Great Staff, FUN
- Cons: Parking
