Big portions. Swett’s is definitely good food but I wouldn’t rate it as great by any means. I had the fried chicken, two large pieces were yummy but both the mac and cheese and cornbread were flavorless. I won't be going back anytime soon.
swetts nashville is a amazing soul food place.. Im from Oklahoma City (Go Sooners). I was in Nashville in October 2008. I asked if there were a Soul Food Place at the hotel i was staying at they referred me to Swetts. I was truly amazed, of the foods, dessert. It taste just like grannie used to make. I will tell all my friends and family members to go there it was wonderful. I will be there on the 14th of december, and will eat there. The only thing i wish they had it as a buffet for example. buffet you can charge $8.00-$8.50 all you can eat. it is worth it.
Where's the beef?.
I love a good meat and three, and I've always heard about Swett's and how good it is. I have since been a couple of times to give it a fair shot but I have not been totally pleased. There was nothing wrong with the food, it tasted fine. The issues I have with Swett's are the portions and the price.
The price is a little higher than average for a meat and three. Also, for that price you would expect some decent portions but everytime I have gone there I walk away hungry. Until they make some changes in those areas then I can't consider this place anything else besides average.
Good food, but a little costly. I grew in the neighborhood where Swett's is located. I remember the ORIGINAL Swett's diner when the matriarch of the family (Mrs. Swett) was living. The food was a lot better then and the prices were affordable. Today things have changed but the Beef Tips are still my favorite. It is however a little overpriced. It's a great place for college students and visitors but there are a few other places in town that have great food and better prices.
Popular local soul food eatery near Fisk University..
In Short
As for the dining area, the windows are big, the tables are clean and even a full house never feels cramped in this sunny room. Family-owned for decades, Swett's offers a surprising variety of what some call meat-and-three and others call soul food. Swett's fried chicken is famous, but connoisseurs know about the baked chicken, beef tips, fish and roast beef. Other favorites are cornbread and sides like baked squash casserole and mac and cheese.
Get ready to spend some money!. This place has wonderful food. However, they think a little too highly of it. I paid almost $12 for meat and three with a drink. I can think of some places in Nashville that have food that is as good as Swett's for less money.
12 on a scale of 1-10. It is no wonder this place has been around for 50 years. That and the fact that the place was packed says more than I can say here. I live in Memphis and will eat here EVERY TIME I am in Nashville!
Fried chicken like it was meant to be. A pleasant cafeteria off the typical tourist track, but well worth your while. Although I wasn't bowled over by the turnip greens, I thought the fried chicken was awesome and other members of my group really liked their beef tips. Excellent cornbread... and if they're serving berry cobbler when you visit, grab some!
Good, but overrated!. I love good ol' southern cooking. The meat and three variety. The food is pretty good but it is overpriced. For a better value, try Norman Couser's Country Cookin or Monells.Swetts fried chicken is good but so is Couser's. Sweet's servers are friendly but so are Monells. The prices are so much better at Cousers and no I am not a family member either!!!
great food. I love Swett's. I went there like once a week when I lived in Nashville. The Mac n' Cheese is sooooo good there.
