Watch what you get..
i do like the Picnic. I do agree the staff could be more friendly and helpful and the food is pricey.
I do have to watch what i get. They have great chicken salad and great pimento cheese. Pricey but good. However i paid $6.00 for two beautiful strawberry cupcakes today that were horrible. Crumbly and not moist. Clearly not fresh. $6.00 is a lot of money to pay for TWO CUPCAKES. Their presentation is always very nice but sometimes DECIEVING and i should have learned my lesson because this is not the first time this has happened to me with their cupcakes.
So i am thinking next time i will ask when it was baked prior to handing over $6.00.
Best Chicken Salad. I have to admit I'm somewhat of a regular at the Picnic... as in I go at least 1-2 times per week. The food isn't anything special (sandwiches, soups, basic salads, casseroles) but what they do have is just plain good. The service is generally pretty good and orders are delivered to your table in a timely manner, although some of the staff is kind of on the elderly side and a little slow. There is a ready-made take-out case that makes to-go orders especially easy. The food is a little on the pricey side for what you get but if you're looking for a simple, Southern lunch, this is the place to go. I love the chicken salad sandwich with cranberry salad (topped with cool whip) on the side. And, the strawberry cake is delicious!
Rude & Unsettling Experience.... We visited The Picnic on Saturday for lunch. Upon arriving, we held back in the line as we didn't immediately know what we wanted which earned us a disapproving look from the cashier. We were not in the way of the flow of people (it wasn't really that crowded). I intended to order the BLT and a cup of soup. However, the cashier followed my order up with "which side?" which lead me to believe it came with a side...not the case and i ended up with more food than needed and more expense than necessary. As I'm allergic to eggs, I asked for no mayo, to which she replied "you wouldn't get any mayo." Again, just unnecessary. If I would have walked into any other cafe and not indicated no mayo on a BLT, it would have had to be sent back. As soon as we get our food, my friend had pickles on her plate and I indicated that I wanted some. She gave me half her pickles, but I knew she wanted them for herself--I know this sounds ridiculous, but stick with me. So, I asked the server if I could get my own pickles to which she replied, "you have some right there." This was the kicker. Why would you insult the intelligence of your customer over a few pickles? I couldn't believe it. This place just exudes inhospitableness. The food was average, though my fresh fruit was nicely presented. The tortilla soup was slimy and full of chunks of processed meat. Overall, a miserable lunch experience.
Outstanding. I highly recommend this cafe. Everything is perfect from your meal to the decor. I pay attention to and appreciate the tiny details and this place has it. The food is delicious, presented beautifully, and the decor is bright and cheerful. Highly recommended for a girlfriends lunch.
A Tucked-Away Treasure. The owner is dedicated to good food and friendly service. The epitome of a mom and pop place - but located in the corner of a drug store!
