Editorial Review for Douglas Corner Cafe – by Craig Shelburne
In Short
This comfortable haunt has all the familiar marks of a neighborhood bar, from the brick walls to the neon beer signs. For the hundreds of local musicians, though, it remains a cornerstone of Nashville's songwriting community. Douglas Corner is where Trisha Yearwood was discovered and locals may remember it for launching acoustic stomp band Bonepony. Be prepared to keep talking to a minimum, though. This is a place to listen and not be heard.

James Westborn's Review: I went to check out the Corner on a Tuesday. This is their writer's night. Nice sound and original setup! I was with my brother-in-law and the place had about 35 listeners, most that were probably players for one of the later rounds. The bartender was Rhonda and she was very nice. The club is small, about 40 by 120 feet. It had six chair's set up in a small, tight circle, in the center of the club. There was a stage to the left right as we walked in, but on this night they don't use it. The writers take turns until each or the 6 or so, have done two songs each. Some of the players/writers were very good and others....just so-so. The sound guy, an older man (65) was ripping some nice fill-licks for some of the writers, as they played. His dobro sound was fitting for several of them. I'm not sure if they worked that out ahead of time. He just sat on the soundman's stool and chimed in every so often. I liked it! There was a printed sheet on each surrounding table, stating you can't sit there unless you buy two drinks...I asked Rhonda about that and she stated it doesn't really apply on Tuesdays (Writers Night) The club owner/operator is Mervyn..he books the folks wanting to play. The rounds I watched had a nice variety of styles, so he must know what he's doing. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to really see what Nashville writers do and their environment. I hope to play there in 2008. James Westborn is a singer/songwriter, with appearances on Various TV shows from American Banstand to TNN's Be A Star. www.cowboysandsheperds for more info

Douglas Corner, Good place to SEE LIVE CONCERT. Been around for a long time. Parking is limited and is near Zanies. A old place with a stage in the front. Has many tables that fill up. Get there early to see a show. More than half the room can see the stage if you are in back people and things can block your view. GOOD NEWS some shows are SMOKE FREE like the KARG BOYS However, the BAD News this IS a SMOKING BAR. Prices for drink were fair. (2006 July 18)
Pros: A Good place to SEE CONCERTS. Small local joint.
Cons: ALLOWS SMOKING.
