In Short – The Sportsplex features the Olympic-size Tracy Caulkins pool, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, and an enormous fitness center with all the fixings, including treadmills, cardio machines, free weights and more. There are also plenty of aerobics classes from which to choose. Swimming and tennis competitions are regularly held at the complex, which is conveniently located next to Centennial Park. The Sportsplex also houses Nashville's oldest ice-skating rink.

Avoid this facility.

I am in town for two-and-a-half weeks for the holidays, and since my previous gym membership is expired, I went to the Sportsplex gym; with a day rate of $5, how bad could it be? I got what I paid for: no bench press, no squat cage, no incline or decline bench, no barbells, no stretching area, and very, very cramped. This place has not been updated since it was built. It's hot in the room, the carpet is filthy, and the equipment is about to fall apart. If you're serious about your fitness, you can do much, much better. Oh, and the locker room is super old school, and not in an endearing way...at all.

  • Pros: Cost, plenty of parking
  • Cons: Equipment (i.e. lack thereof), atmosphere, locker room

Best kept secret...

The organization I work for paid for my membership and I was hesitant to go to a "public" gym and was holding out to find a club that worked for me. I decided to give Sportsplex a try and I'm glad that I did. The equipment could use a little updating, but if you just want a basic work-out and you don't want to wait for a treadmill, etc., then I highly recommend this place. Normal people there working out, not the parade of lip-sticked soccer moms in leotards and hulk-like men on the prowl. Low membership and very convenient. I can get in and out of there quickly and that encourages me to keep coming back. I hear the classes are quite good, as well.

  • Pros: Convenient, no wait for equipment, not intimidating
  • Cons: Needs some upgrading, better orientation system, not open on Sundays
