In Short
DaVinci's, located in a refurbished house near Vanderbilt, bills itself as the home of "gourmet pizza." It's simple, hearty and elegant at the same time. There are more choices for toppings--including vintage Italian sausage, black beans, smoked oysters--than most pizza places combined. Salads, beer and wine are also on the menu, but the real American pies are the standouts.

The pizza is pretty good. It has a good crust texture, and the sauce has a ton of flavor. There is a wide variety of pizza toppings, although it should be larger considering that there is not much else on the menu other than pizza. If you're not going to offer more than 2 pasta dishes and some boring salads, you should have some more gourmet toppings. There are only a few appetizers to choose form as well, which does not make you want to eat a full meal there...maybe just order food to go. There was not music playing when we ate there, so the dining room was dead silent. I found this troubling since you could hear every work of your neighbors' conversations. There was only 1 waitress, and she was visibly overwhelmed. Also, it took a while to get the food. The pizzas are baked fresh, which is a great aspect of the place. However, one would think that throughtout the day, they would be at least baking crusts at 30-minute intervals or something. We waited 25 minutes for a pizza, which is too long to wait at lunch. Also, this establishment does not take Discover...I believe just V and MC. I take issue with establishments that do that. It's like they're saying to you, "We don't care what type of credit/debit cared you use...the fees are too high, and we don't value your business enought to pay the extra 4%." For those reasons, the good pizza is not enough to get me to go back.

Nice patio, and the staff seems to think people sit at the outside tables just to take a load off, not to actually eat. My wife and I have never had good service at Davinci's. On our last and final attempt to give them a chance, we sat at a table outside. After being seated for 5 minutes, a large group of people arrived. A waitress asked us to move so that she could accomodate the large group. We politely moved to another table across the patio. So there we sat for the next 10 minutes watching servers go in and out. I swear if I were a person of color, I would have cried racism. We left. Never been back, never will go back.

This isn't Papa John's... Offering eat-in and carry-out options, Davinci's pizza has a flaky, crispy, medium-thick crust, freshly cut toppings and quality meats and cheeses. The menu offers a variety of suggested combinations, or you can make your own. It's popular with the Vandy crowd and takes time to prepare, so bring your patience if you're dining in, but you won't be sorry when the pie arrives. Great for large groups. Well-packaged for carry out, and promise times are generally very accurate.
