In Short – What started off in Donelson, Tenn. as "Mr. D's" in 1969 has evolved into fast food chain "Captain D's" with restaurants across more than 20 states. Touting high quality and quick-service seafood and traditional Southern fare as its mission, the menu offers hand-battered fried, baked, broiled fish, shrimp and chicken dishes. Starters include cheese sticks and jalapeno bites, seafood-stuffed crab shells and side items like corn, baked potato, coleslaw, tossed salads, hushpuppies and desserts.
Editor's Tips
- Know Before You Go:
- Dieters will be happy to discover the "Lighter Fare" menu with options like the bite-size shrimp salad.
- The Extras:
- Some restaurants also offer clam strips, oysters, flounder and catfish, and other seasonal specials.
- Save Money:
- Opt for the 10-piece fish value pack or the 12-piece Seafood Feast, which comes with shrimp, crab shells and sides.
Good seafood for good prices

The food at Captain D's is just as good as any sit-down seafood restaurant. The prices are not bad either. Don't go if you are in a hurry though, it takes a while for the food to come out.
- Pros: Good food, good prices
- Cons: Slow
Not a good place to eat on Sunday when church lets out.

The atmosphere was very tense, orders were being brought back because they were not complete with what was ordered. The clerk that took my order was demonstrating much stress. I ordered seafood scampi not knowing and was not told that I was to select certain seasoning, sauce, etc. The food had no taste whatsoever. The salad with it was made up of brown lettuce and water in the tray. I mentioned to the server/ clerk about this and she just said that I was suppose to specify what type of scampi and kept walking, no apology whatsoever. I have eaten at this Captain D's many times in the past but had not recently. What a disappointment! The menu looks great but what I saw was poor management. I will not go back.
- Pros: Good menu if the kitchen really knew how to prepare it.
- Cons: Service was terrible.
