The Background – The Union Army captured Nashville in 1862, and by 1864, Confederate General Hood and his Army of Tennessee were prepared to take it back. Marching up from the South, the small town of Franklin stood between Nashville and General Hood's soldiers. Against the wishes of his other generals, and common sense, Hood decided on a full frontal assault.
