STAY FAR AWAY - THE SCAM CONTINUES! – AS AN UPDATE TO THE 7/30/11 POST - I decided this was not worth fighting over and paid $127.80 by check # 1070 on 7/31/11, with “Full and Final Settlement of all Sums Due” in the memo line. $127.80 is the monthly Wellness Plan amount for the months of May, June, July and August 2011. This amount cleared my account on September 12, 2011, with “Banfield 8502 CA BFCALCTR” in the description on my on line bank account. The harassing letters & telephone calls stopped, so I considered the matter resolved. But today, 3/1/12, and 6 months after the settlement check cleared, I received a letter from the Brentwood Banfield – signed by Dr. Coffeen and office manger Ashley Ring - stating the last payment I had made was on 4/5/11 and that I owed for 5 months. They offered to “settle” by my paying $159.35 and FAILED to acknowledge the $127.80 I already paid.
I am truly concerned this is a scam operation and others are likely being scammed as well. Banfield will harass and threaten until they get their wellness plan fees (and threatened to turn me over to collections for fees I already paid!!)
There are tons of postings all over the internet about Banfield Pet Hospital’s poor trade practices and I note that there are responses to the postings from the Banfield “Client Advocacy Team” giving a toll free number for me to call to discuss this issue, including a response to my initial posting about this in July 2011. HELLO BANFIELD CLIENT ADVOCACY TEAM- if you are truly concerned about resolving this problem, instead of me having to call you, how about YOU pick up the telephone call Dr. Coffeen and Ashley Ring, as clearly your right hand does not know what your left hand is doing. Of course you are not going to call them to straiten this out, you are just posting this to save face on line. Your corporate culture, as far as I can tell, has one and only one goal – to suck as much money out of people that you can, and I am sure you approve and encourage Dr. Coffeen and Ms. Ring’s actions.
STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!! – I started using Banfield in 2007, signing up for one of their Wellness Plans when it was $16.95 per month. After being advised it would be better to upgrade the plan for some dental work needed in 2009, I was assured I could cancel at any time to take advantage of the upgraded plan savings. I did not, until 2011 when the cost increased to $32 per month (not to mention the hundreds of dollars I would spend each visit - where is the savings??). Therefore, I made the decision to cancel in April. That has turned into a NIGHTMARE with my husband and I getting harassing letters and telephone calls to our home - including today (Saturday) ALTHOUGH I AM AN ATTORNEY (and am mindful everyone thinks we are rich but assure everyone I am NOT) AND ADVISED THEM IN WIRTING MANY TIMES TO CORRESPOND WITH ME TO MY OFFICE IN WRITING!! They are VULTURES when it comes to the monthly wellness plan fee. I have even received a personal letter authored by three of the vets there
Excellent Vet – I adopted a puppy a few months ago from a local rescue. He came with pretty bad case of kennel cough and I felt horrible for him so I made an appointment at a well reviewed vet in Spring Hill. They were nice enough, but I was herded in and out like cattle. The vet grabbed my puppies skin to show me how to apply flea drops and made him cry out in pain. It was over $100 and I never went back.
I then tried another vet in Spring Hill who I was happy with for a few visits. Then one visit, the vet called me to tell me that they thought my dog was a "meth dog" because he was excreeting a cat urine smell and we didn't have a cat. Basically meth addicts smell like urine and they then labeled my puppy a meth dog. They wanted to quarantine him because they said he was potentially toxic to my environment. I was terrified but even after that I gave them a 2nd chance only to have them misdiagnose my puppies chronic diarhea on two different occassions.
I decided that a wellness plan from Banfield would be a great fit for my puppy with already over 1k in vet bills at 5 months old. I made an appointment and after what I had been though, I was expecting disappointment. I was very pleased with Dr. Coffeen. He came in and patted my puppy and gave him biscuits saying he didn't want him to have a bad experience. He really took his time and they did a fecal exam, finally diagnosing what the previous vet had missed on two separate tests. He had Coccidia and some badly iritated anal glands.
After treatment he went back for one of his two free comprehensive exams and he was back to perfect health. They have always been professional and caring to me and have never tried to push products or services on me.
Bad! Never would recommend! – I actually work along side of Banfield in PetSmart for a little while now. But I will NEVER take my animals there! They try to up sell you on every little thing. They do NOT see the animals or the owners best interest. The vet ONLY sees $$$! I see how they treat the animals the store takes over if they are ill and he is more likely to put the animal to sleep rather than treat it.....then charge you an arm and a leg! I would never trust these vets! They are unethical, rude, and ignorant! Just stay away, Far Far Away!!!
a $1500 misdiagnosis – Dr.Coffeen was CONFIDENT my dog had a torn ACL and wanted me asap to cough up 1500 bucks for this emergency surgery. Thank god I went else where. Come to find out my dog has fine knees and actually has hip issues and I would have undergone unnecessary surgery, 1500 bucks, hurt my poor dog, and subjected him to 3 months of physical rehabilitation for nothing. Not only that, but being that Dr.Coffeen was under the impression my dog had a torn knee ligament they sent him out completely drugged up after their "inspection" to where he was falling all over the place and could barely walk. My dog is 80 lbs.. now does that make sense for a vet thinking a dog had a busted knee to let the dog out all drugged to where they could damage it even further? I went to Battleground Animal Hospital instead. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM... they actually care and know what they are doing.
Dr. Coffeen is the ONLY vet I prefer to take my dog to – I've taken my dog to Dr. Coffeen since she was 6 weeks old and after 9 years, he is the ONLY Veterinarian I will take her to. He not only has 3 decades of experience, but has the doctoral instincts to boot. If it weren't for him, my dog wouldn't be alive right now. After consulting with the pet's owner, he performs only the necessary tests so as to not run up the bill. He has not only the pet's, but also the owner's best interests in mind.
Dr. Coffeen is also a GOOD soul and has a real tender heart for the animals he sees. He is personable and is very down to earth. I recommend him to EVERY pet owner I meet.

Avoid This Veterinarian At All Cost, He Made News Headlines Not In A Positive Way! – This veterinarian, G. Patrick Coffeen has no business practicing Veterinary Medicine. He was caught performing surgery while intoxicated. This was on the local channel 4 new a few years ago. I know this man personally, in fact I worked for him and was sickened by his work ethics, I have no doubt that the news story was acurate. I do not understand why this man is able to practice medicine today. I suppose when you have money and have a big corporation behind you, you can get away with anything. I have been a registered veterinary nurse for over 20 years and have worked with the best. I am also sorry to say that I had worked for the worst as well, G. Patrick Coffeen, it does not get any lower then that.
