Editorial Review for Studio Museum in Harlem – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
The Museum was founded in 1968, and has continued to give voice to the culture of one of New York's most vital neighborhoods. The permanent collection contains arts and artifacts in various media, including the photographic works of James Van Der Zee, the preeminent documenter of Harlem life from the '20s through the '40s. Activities include regular exhibitions, an artist-in-residence program, lectures, educational events and programs and a film series.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Unlike many museums which put the free day in the middle of the week, the Studio Museum in Harlem discards its admission fee on the first Saturday of every month. That's prime time. (Parents will be glad to learn that children under 12 are always free.)

The Extras

Guided tours at the museum aren't restricted to the artwork on display. The Studio Museum also hosts tours of Harlem architecture and, further from the esteemed halls, of other exhibits around the city.
