worth driving from ohio for. black 13 is an awesome shop. this is coming from someone who is around alot of tattoo shops and frequently hangs out in them. i would have to say black 13 is by far my favorite. its a great mix of amazing artists very clean and comfortable atmosphere. in my opinion being comfortable is the one of the most important factors when deciding on an establishment to get work done. obviously second to the work of the artists, which at this shop is nothing to worry about.

I drove from cleveland ohio to nashville to get tattooed by ryan thomas which is black 13's newest addition. he has done the majority of my work all of which is amazing. if you are close to nashville or even as far as me its worth the drive to get tattooed by ryan or any of the other artists at black 13

6 Stars!. Black 13 is an amazing shop with an amazing group of people. From my research on their website (which is awesome also), to my initial visit to check things out all the way through my scheduled appointment, everyone in the shop was easy to deal with. Professional, friendly, genuine, knowledgeable - I can't say enough great things about them. The shop is awesome, CLEAN, and overall inviting.

This visit was for my first tattoo, and I was lucky enough to have Ryan Thomas do the work. I will definitely tell everyone I know about Ryan and the exceptional job he did. I'm already planning my next piece and will definitely be back to see him.

Great Experience. From start to finish the entire process at Black 13 couldn't have been better. Doy was very courteous and quick with responses to my questions.

The shop is great in the layout and vibe. It's very laid back and welcoming. I knew I made the right choice as soon as I walked in.

My appointment was with Ian White, and he is an amazing artist. He was very attentive in listening to my ideas and making sure we got it perfect before we started. It was great to not feel rushed through the process. He was friendly and laid back throughout my session, and he made sure to explain everything I needed to do for aftercare. I walked out with a tattoo that is better than I could have imagined.

When I am ready for my next tattoo, I will definitely be going back to Ian and Black 13.

Thanks guys for making my first tattoo a great time. I'll be spreading the good word.

You will not find a better tattoo shop anywhere!. The website, shop, artists, and management are all simply amazing. Doy was quick to answer any and all questions I had either via email or phone. The shop is immaculate and classic in it's design and decoration. The staff is extremely professional and the artists are unbelievably talented. Marty was able to take a vision I had in my head for my first tattoo and turn it into something beyond my wildest expectations. I walked in bound and determined to get ONE tattoo and left thinking about ideas for my next one.

Thanks gentlemen for a job well done. I'll be seeing you again in the near future.

THE place to get tattooed in Nashville!. Everything about Black 13 is top notch! I read all the great reviews before I went (which is why I decided on getting my work done there), and they lived up to every expectation.



1) The Parlor - Amazing space. You know you're in a professional area as soon as you walk in the door. This is evident simply in their logo (clean, professional, understated, and classic). You can tell a lot of thought went into the space. Nice high ceilings (the exposed pipes/lighting give some great focal points to stare at while getting work done :) ). Tons of artwork line the walls (REAL artwork, not Flash), including some incredible (and incredibly large) spray-paint-on-canvas work from Marty. This place feels like an art gallery.



2) The Talent - You can tell from the website that all the guys there are amazingly talented. Ian White did my tattoo, and I am absolutely THRILLED with the result. I had some ideas about what I wanted and some reference material, and Ian knocked the final design out of the park. I couldn't have asked for a better representation of what I was looking for. The session itself was great - good music playing (didn't even have to break out my iPod), good conversation (Ian was very laid back and does not act like he is better than you - and I got that vibe from everyone there), and again, an AMAZING finished product. These guys are not "tracers", they are true artists. I feel like I should charge people just to look at my tattoo! Ryan and Steve were also working on pieces while i was there and the results of those were sick! And yes, there is a wait to get work done. I had to wait a few weeks for my appointment. But it was worth the wait and then some. There's a reason these guys are booked solid. They're the best in Nashville by far, and I'd venture to say the best in TN, possibly the best in the south, and maybe even the US. It's simply amazing that we have a shop of this caliber in Nashville.



3) The Business/Marketing/Ownership - You can tell that this place cares about their relationship with their customers and growing their business to be the best it can be. The website is first rate. They have a great presence on social networking sites (primarily Facebook and Twitter), showing they have an idea of how businesses need to operate in this current age. And their communication blew me away. Anytime I called, the person on the phone was really helpful and didn't sound like they were just trying to get me off the phone. I exchanged emails with Doy Gardner (one of the owners), trying to get my ideas across and schedule the appointment. Doy was incredibly responsive (to the point I was actually surprised at how prompt the responses were) and extremely helpful.



Stop looking around for a place to get your work done, and schedule an appointment now! I've had some work done at other places in Nashville, but any future work will be done at Black 13!

Black 13 - best place to get a tattoo!!!. Where to begin.....

I started this trek around 2 years ago....

I knew i wanted a half sleeve, and I knew i didnt want just anyone to do it. I wanted the best. I stumbled across the Black 13 website a while back and was absolutely amazed by the skill of all the artists, however upon looking at such amazing artwork, i assumed that it would be far out of my price range.....So alas, I kept searching.

My searches kept turning up the same name....Black 13. About a year after my first contact with Black 13, i decided to contact them...just for the hell of it. I was overjoyed when Doy contacted me back almost immediately. Doy and I corresponded daily for almost 2 weeks trying to sort out my tattoo. I wanted a medieval style dragon (western style) and a phoenix (Dragon to represent me, and phoenix to represent my late father) as well as a couple of things to represent my kids and I wanted this crammed into a half sleeve. I inquired about price, and I firmly believe that you cant put a price on art, but money is an object to me and I needed to make sure that it wouldnt break the bank. I was delighted to find that the hourly rate was very reasonable. I would have been happy to have any of the guys at Black 13 do my tattoo, however Josh Woods style of art was intriguing and I really wanted to see how my ideas would look in his style. Doy told me that josh stays booked up months in advance, so it would be a couple of months before i could get in. I agreed, and since it would be a couple of hours drive for me to get to Nashville, a couple of months worked out well to sort things out with work and home before I went to Nashville.

When the day finally came, I was super stoked!! Arrival at Black 13 was different from other shops that I have been to. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. Josh measured my arm and went to work sketching out the tat. They spared no expense on the atmosphere. It is tasteful and classy. I felt almost like I was at some sort of twisted spa. They even provided me with free amp energy drink!! It truly is a class establishment.

Josh had the sketch done in about 45 minutes. He had the lines inked on my arm in 2.5 hours, and he finished the whole deal in around 8 hours. I was amazed at how fast and how good he really was. He is truly one of the elite in the business.

The Tattoo is the most awesome thing I have ever seen. It is 100 times better than I could have ever imagined. If you have ever thought about getting a tattoo, I highly suggest Black 13!!!!

exactly what I had envisioned...only better!. I got my first tattoo from Ian White at Black 13 and couldn't have been any more pleased with my experience and the tattoo.

When I decided that it was time to find the right person to do my tattoo I knew that researching the best person for me was going to be the biggest part of the battle. Thankfully, I have a lot of friends with amazing tattoos and was directed to Ian.

Although my tattoo is simply script and not the pinnacle of creativity, it was still critical to me that it be exactly what I wanted...and good. It was not an option to walk-in to a shop and have whoever is available immediately knock it out.

After stalking Ian's work over the internet, I made an appointment and gave him a brief description of what I was looking for. The evening I went in to get it done, he had had sketched the word and to no surprise it was 1,000 times better than I could have ever imagined...prettier than any I'd seen before. In the limited amount of freedom he had in the one word he tattooed for me, Ian was able to execute exactly what I had envisioned...only better! I'm so proud of it and glad it's mine, and it's only one word!

I would absolutely recommend and suggest looking into Black 13 for your next tattoo.

Another great experience. I emailed Doy to set my appointment and give some ideas about what I wanted and he got back to me quickly and I was set to go.

When I got there, I was in the capable hands of Marty McEwen once again. We discussed the design, I wanted a few changes and he suggested some more. He went back, drew it out and I was very pleased with the final result of our collaboration. The tattoo is exactly what I wanted.

It was a pleasant experience from beginning to end. Love the location, the "feel" of the parlor, and the people (Doy, Fred, and Marty) are great! This is the place to go if you are looking to Get want you Want done.

Excellent Parlor. My friend and i have been researching tattoos in the area and were amazed at all the positive reviews we found while searching though this site. I've had a design that I've wanted for about a year now and once i found these guys i knew they were perfect. These guys were great right from the start. I stay busy due to my job and it was a huge help that i was able to email them what i wanted and discuss things. They were very informative and suggested Ian for my ideas. They took the time to explain details about tattooing and why they were making certain suggestions. I never knew a lot about tattooing and now I feel like i got a little knowledge under my belt. The parlor itself looks phenomenal and service once i was there, great great great!! I'm so excited to get back. Thanks so much to Ian and the guys at Black 13!

A Tattoo Parlour unlike any other... First off, I have one or two tattoos and have experienced the process with many different artists - I have been tattooed by everyone of the guys at B13 and each time it was unique, comfortable and in the end resulted in a great piece of art. The shop is decorated in a cool modern decor but you still know your in a tattoo shop. The guys up front are always exceptional at guiding you through the set up and all the artists will give you time to walk through the design process. This is going to be on you for life and you get the feeling from everyone working there that they really care about that.

The shop offers an artist for everyone, they have four or five artists working at any given time and each one brings something unique to the table. So whatever you are looking for B13 will have someone to suit you. People always compliment my work and always ask where i got them or where i would suggest. These days it is hard to recommend anything to people especially something like a tattoo shop but i know when i tell people the only place in Nashville to go is B13 i can say that with total confidence..
