Editorial Review for Savarino's Cucina – by Andrew Kerr
In Short
Smells of fresh baked bread and garlic permeate this traditional New York-style cafe, which specializes in classic Italian offerings from eggplant Parmesan to their signature cannoli. The bright, clean interior is dominated by a large deli counter that tempts customers with colorful confections and high-end meats and cheeses like prosciutto di Parma and the semi-soft Taleggio. The half-dozen tables create a cozy atmosphere for quick lunch-time meals or weekend mornings spent stewing over foaming cappuccinos.

I recently went to Savarino's because I had heard about all the hype. Decided to take the recommendations of not only those reviewing here, but also from print articles. Ordered the Lasagna and a slice of cheesecake. The cheesecake was not that good. Publix cheesecake is 10X better. Lasagna was huge portion as other reviewers touted but it was very salty and oily. I did not enjoy my lunch. I was truly disappointed by the cheesecake. I grew up in NYC and I've had my share of NY Style Cheesecake. The pastries looked great, but I'm glad I didn't get any of those because I think I would have also been disappointed. I truly was not impressed by Savarino's at all. Maybe it was all the hype. I suggest you go to the Italian Market off of Charlotte. It is soooooo much better and the food is DELICIOUS too. I think I'll stick with them when I want to have authentic Italian food and sandwiches. They know how to prepare Italian food that tastes delicious.
Pros: Large Lasagna Portion
Cons: Food Does not Taste As Good As It Looks

Yummy desserts, especially the cheesecake! Lasagna was great and a very generous portion easily enough for 2 people. Marinated veggie sandwich was a bit too vinegar-y for me, but veggies tender and good. Only a few tables so take out is a good idea. Last time I checked they didn't serve plain coffee--just espressos, etc. Italian grocery items available for purchase, too. Parking lot is tiny, but street parking is available. Get there early on weekend to get freshly baked pastries before they're gone!
