Franklin >Mellow Mushroom
I have eaten at the Franklin Mellow Mushroom several times and never had a negative experience such as some previous posters described. Yes, sometimes they are busy and you do have to wait to be seated, but I have never had them be rude to me or my family. The food is excellent and they have a great variety of tasty brews. I eat here about once a month and would recommend it to anyone.
Mellow also offers vegan cheese options!
I came home from work with a hankering for some good pizza, and some good beer. Finding both under the same roof in TN is quite hard, but on occasions, the MM manages. I just wanted some Hoegaarden and a sausage, mushroom, onion, and ricotta pizza: like you can find at ANY decent pizza place in the northeast. I've actually had it at MM, and it was really good: once. Since then, they always claim to be out of ricotta, which seems odd, since they sell calzones?? So, after ordering a Spin-Dip appetizer, I ordered a Buffalo chicken pizza and a cheese with S, M, O and ricotta.
Shortly after receiving our appetizer, which by the way was stone cold ( like it was ready 20 minutes earlier and was never picked up), I was informed by our waitress/bartender, that ricotta was not available tonite (again, see above. If they don't have fresh ricotta, how do the make calzones? Frozen? I would guess so.). Anyhoos, I told her to just cancel the pizza. She thought I meant just the ricotta, so I clearly stated to kill the entire pizza. When the buffalo chicken pizza arrives, she tries to guilt me into taking the other pizza (which, apparently, was already being cooked when she came to inform me that ricotta was not an option). I declined. I mean, why would you make a pizza when you don't have the toppings requested? What's the point?
Later, when we hadn't even finished eating, the server came by and stuck a box in our face (it was 10:15, and apparently, they close at 10PM). Hint taken. Before I could request to pay cash for the tab (I had handed her a CC to start the bar tab before we decided to eat at the bar), I had a credit car receipt in my face on the card I did NOT want charged. Awesome.
Bottom line: MM will make a killer pizza on occasion. With all the $hit3 pizza joints all over Nashville, it's about the only place that can hit a home-run (on occasion). I haven't had a decent pizza in 12 years since living here. I don't know why I continue to try. Uncle Gios (on Nolensville) was as close as you could get to Northern-style pizza. Too bad they went under. They should have named the place "Jets" and southerners would flock there for crappy Sicilian pizza with pellet meatballs and sausage that looks like rabbit droppings.
It's just disappointing to know that I'll only have a good pizza when I leave the south. I'll just have to wait for my next trip to New Haven or Brooklyn.
Will I go to MM again? Probably in another year when i forget that the service provided by their dread-locked, patchouli-wearing, dirty-T-shirt donning, Nashville wanna-be hipster staff sucks, and the food is hit or miss. I'm guessing another year or so.
Terrible Service but good food. The people out front don't seem to know where they are going or what they are supposed to do. The kitchen is no better. We were seated and kept getting annoying cell phone calls asking if were near the restaurant. The server was a friendly young man. We waited thirty minutes and finally some guy, without apology, came out from the kitchen and said, I hope your not in a hurry, Rude, inconsiderate, disorganized. I wouldn't give them a star for service...it was that bad. The poor server kept apologizing for the poor management of this restaurant. Finally, I told them if the pizza wasn't out immediately I was leaving. I am usually patient and was at this time, but the way this was handled was so poor. Wake up management at Mellow Mushroom, if there is any, if you don't have customers you will not be in business. I have purchased a number of pizza's to carry out and never had issues. I doubt I will spend money with them again. Other people are interested in their customers. I will go there.
I didn't mind waiting for a table!.
Great: Food, service, wait for seating, everything.
We arrived at and discovered over an hour wait. I am a restaurant manager in Atlanta and would not have even considered coming here because of the crowds....but for being on an hour wait, the restaurant didn't seem that crowded but all the tables were full and everything was very smooth and easy to navigate. The new experience for me is that they asked me for my mobile phone number to call me on when seating was available. I thought that was great! We walked through the local stores and sure enough, about 50 minutes later, my phone rang asking me to return to the host stand. There, we were taken to our table and then server greeted us at our table. All of this was very professional. We ordered drinks while we looked over a very well designed menu. The drinks were served within a few minutes and we ordered an appetizer.
I had to know how the restaurant was running so smoothly with an hour quoted wait time so I asked the manager, Daryl, and he said they used a Wait List manager system by Queuent that called customers on their mobile phones when seating was available. So even though we had to wait an hour, we were able to get our movie tickets and shop around the area while we waited. And if that are at the other end of the strip, the system lets them delay by 15 minutes. No crowds - great wait experience!
All in all, a great casual night out for my wife and I. Highly recommended for a dinner + movie night. And being able to walk around instead of standing in a crowded restaurant waiting for a table, really made the evening.
Questionable management. A beautiful Memorial Day afternoon and my family chose to enjoy a pizza on the patio at Mellow Mushroom in Franklin. We were happy to see a couple of available tables outside when we arrived and asked for seating outside. The young kid at the hostess stand stated that his manager no longer was seating people outside, something about possible rain. I asked to speak to the manager, and yes.... he stated that there were rains forecasted for 5pm (it was currently 4pm) and he was shutting down the patio. It was curious enough that an establishment would shut down a wonderful patio 1 hour before possible rain, but even more amazing that he would do it on an absolutely gorgeous day! Sunny, 83 degrees, and not a cloud in the sky. I was very disappointed in the manager's judgement, and our family chose to eat at another place with a patio. (By the way - - it never rained, we had a great meal outside on the patio at McDougals. We even went for a one hour stroll afterwards the weather was so nice!)
Horrible Service, Rude Waiter and Greeter. We entered the restaurant with 2 famalies, we had 10 people in total. The greeter told us that it was a 20 minute wait, so we walked through the downtown area then came back. They told us again it was another 20 minutes wait and they were terribly busy. So I walked around the restaurant and at least 25% of the tables were open, I told the server that we would like to push 2 tables together, and again they told us to wait another 20 minutes. We waited another 20 minutes, and asked again. They told us they needed another 20 minutes, and the restaurant was not that busy!! What is up with these people, do they not know they own a restaurant and make their money by serving food to people? So I asked for take out and ordered my food to go. The food only took about 10 minutes to make and we were on our way finally. The person at the take out counter said the waitresses and greeters were angry and lashing it out on the customers because their boss did not give them a good review the day before.....well, don't make that our problem next time!! I will never go here again, even though the food was decent.
good pizza, not so great calzones.
I really like the pizza when we add provolone cheese to it.
The meat pizza we had had too many types of meat and was distracting in flavor-- but the provolone cheese with portabello mushrooms pizza was awesome!! We've had that twice. We've also had their calzones and my husbands was tolerable-- but mine with total mush-- raw dough--- I couldn't tolerate that-- so that sucked.
the service the first time we went was fine, but the other times we've been it hasn't been the best- very inattentive.
We consider going sometimes-- but only for the tried and true pizza, portabello with provolone pizza--
Service is terrible, staff is rude. I actually cannot comment on how the food is at this restaurant because my family and I have left without being seated.....TWICE!!! The first time we left, we stood there for 15 minutes with our two young children waiting for someone to take our name or seat us. During this time several employees walked by looked at us, did not acknowlege our presence, or offer to help us. So we left in disbelief that the service at this new restaurant was so poor. We decided to give it another chance thinking that night might have been just a fluke. We did get our name on the list today, however the girl was rude about it. We soon found out it wasn't just us, she was rude to everyone who came after us, and actually while we were still standing there we watched a couple walk out that had been waiting longer than us, and a group of FIVE people walked out after the employees were rude about adjusting a table to better accomodate some elderly people with their party. So in total 11 people, including us, walked out of this restaurant in the 25 minutes we stood there, after "rude hostess" told us it would be a ten minute wait. Shame on us for returning to a place that didn't make a good first impression to begin with. After talking to several other people, all have said the same thing...the service there is terrible. That is a reputation that will eventually outweigh good pizza, it's simply a matter of time.
Best Pizza ever!. I love their pizza! They have so many selections with great prices. This is a great place for the family or for large groups. They also have a bar which is a plus!
Upscale beer & pizza ~ Great Atmosphere!. This is my favorite place to go. They have a HUGE selection of beer and liquor. They also have the best pizza around! They're hoagies are great & there are a lot of vegetarian selections. The people who work there are really nice & they know us by name. Don't forget NTN trivia!! Love it.
