In Short – One of the most gruesome Civil War battles took place here between December 31, 1862 and January 2, 1863, resulting in 23,000 casualties and no clear victory. Afterward, the Union Army constructed Fortress Rosecrans, a large earthen supply depot which still stands. Now, the National Park Service manages about ten percent of the original battlefield, including Stones River National Cemetery, which was established in 1865 and contains more than 6,000 Union graves. –
