Editorial Review for Fannie Mae Dees Park – by Shelton Clark

In Short
Residents of the Vanderbilt area often refer to Fannie Mae Dees Park as "Dragon Park," thanks to Pedro Silva's 20-year-old sea serpent, which features hundreds of personal designs--including faces, birds, alien creatures, flowers and animals--all made of cut or chipped tiles painted by local artists. Over several months in 1999, neighborhood volunteers gave the beloved reptile much-needed repairs and polish, making him as handsome--and climbable--as ever.

I live 20 minutes from this park and will often go to Dragon Park rather than any other in my area (and there are many). The park is surprisingly clean for the location - I never see any trash on the ground. It's a great place to bring your kid(s). Pets are welcome. Lots of trees and shade, picnic area for large groups, amazing play ground. I guess you're technically not supposed to climb the dragon, but many adults do (I'm guilty), as it's a good challenge. And just to correct the previous reviewer - there is a public restroom at the park - though it is small. It's located near the playground equipment.

Pros: Great park - lots of rom for sports, play, relaxing

Cons: There's a busy road near by and a rather noisy walking signal for pedestrians (get's annoying after a while).

this is a great place for people of all ages, from couples (keep it pg, please!), to families with young children, to college students looking for a nice place to study or play. you can rent the pavilions for your next cookout (it's the home of the annual Blair School of Music Picnic!). a great place to discover your inner child on a sunny afternoon. oh, and hillsboro village with it's great shopping and restaurants is only a couple blocks away!

Pros: clean, attractive, close to hillsboro, the dragon!

Cons: next to a big street, no bathrooms

Eye-catching and functional, Pedro Silva's sea serpent is art to be climbed on as well as observed.  See the full editorial review.
