Editorial Review for Gerst Haus – by Jim Myers

In Short
The Gerst Haus's interior is clean and bright, with light shining through pastel glass on maize-colored walls. German-flag bunting and framed hunting scenes give a hint of the old charm. Regulars order fishbowl glasses of Gerst beer, the namesake brew, and marvel at the selection of more than a dozen taps. German classics dominate the menu, including veal Schnitzel three ways, goulash, sauerbraten and rouladen. For sides, there's sweet red cabbage and chewy spaetzle.

Know Before You Go

There really was a Gerst brewery in Nashville. The amber brew is now made in Evansville.

My family of 4 made it to the restaurant around 2pm on Saturday. It was really slow with plenty of room. The hostess looked bored to see us and it took a while for the waiter to approach our table. He looked less than enthused to be there and his attitude did not change. The food was pretty good-a bit bland but good enough. I had really wanted to try this place but the service really left a damper on the meal. I would probably go back again-just hope for a different waiter.

Pros: Atmosphere

Cons: Staff

I, along with several collegues, made our way in rush hour traffic to enjoy some german food. It was a warm night for the season and I could see as I pulled in that the patio was filling up quickly. Thankfully there were still about three tables empty. I went inside and as I approched the receptionist, a waitress walked behind her and said, "DO NOT put anyone else outside, I don't want anymore". I'm thinking....here we go. So when the receptionist asked, I told her that the party wanted to sit outside. Now, I kept in mind that the weather was unexpected and staffing for outdoor seating would reflect that (longer wait). That was until I saw the dining room. There were 6, count em, 6 people in the dining room. That negates any lag in service. You would think that anyone working the dining room would jump at the chance for a table. Anyway, once the pregnant teenager finished cleaning her finger nails, she informed me that the patio was closed for a private party. I then asked, " the entire patio is closed?" Looking dumbfounded, she said "yeah" So I took a table inside. Then the waitress (another minor) brought over the menus and silverware and dropped them in a pile on the sticky table and left to join the chickens cackling at the receptionist's area. Well, if thats how the meal starts, imagine what will happen when they actually have to start working. It was then that we all got up, and took our business elsewhere. With service like this, I can see why there were only 6 people eating. Keep looking. Besides, its McGerman at best.

Pros: still can't find one

Cons: Service, service, service
