In Short – After many decades--and venue changes--the Grand Ole Opry is still the stage aspiring country stars dream of playing on. On Fridays, Saturdays and often on Tuesdays, Nashville mainstays entertain tourists. Though these performances are also broadcast on the radio and the Internet, no visit is complete without catching a live show. The Opry House occasionally hosts gospel concerts or church conventions and sometimes you can catch free music on the Opry Plaza.

What An Experience!

by CountryGirl02

OMGosh!! What a surreal experience! I've been listening to WSM online for quite a few years and watched Opry LIVE! on TV but nothing compares to experiencing it in person! We went to a Saturday evening show; even though our seats were in the nose-bleed section it was awesome just being there! Some of the jokes were a bit corny (Little Jimmy Dickens seems to do the same schtick with every show) but the southern sense of humor is golden. As for the music ... WOW!!! Vince Gill who sang a song that sent chills!! The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performed Mr. Bojangles (Vince Gill played along) which is one of our favorite songs and the entire audience joined in at the chorus right on cue! The other entertainers were: Josh Turner, Mel Tillis, Connie Smith, The Whites, Mike Snider, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Jack Green (for a man his age, he was absolutely phenomenal!). Needless to say, the Opry delivered what we had expected ... and more!! Also, if you decide to go don't miss Music Mile in downtown Nashville ... Lots of honkytonk bars, Ernest Tubb's Record Shop, restaurants and singers. In addition, the Opry Mills Mall is a great place for one-stop shopping, get a bite to eat, see a movie, etc. All in all, the trip to Nashville is wonderful. Actually, the entire State of Tennessee has alot to offer avid travellers.

AT the Ryman

by electrocution

We have been several times to the Ryman and as always it was spectacular. The seating is the only drawback. But it is an old building. The bench style seating can get cramped depending on the girth of your neighbors. But the show makes up for that. As usual a great diversity of musical talent

  • Pros: show, history, location
  • Cons: seating

A Wonderful Place

by jerryo1028

My first trip to the Opry was a several years back. I didn't know who was going to play that night. We were there for the radio show and they had a newcomer there that night.

It was his first apperance and he sang "If Tomorrow Never Comes" (Garth Brooks), and I told my group, "That boy is going to be Big". I recommend the trip to anyone who loves country music as much as I do.
