The Association for Retarded Citizens, a national organization commonly referred to as "The Arc," supports a better quality of life for people with mental retardation and other handicapping conditions. The Davidson county Arc chapter serves Davidson county and middle Tennessee and works to prevent mental retardation, increase public awareness and education, provide family support and referral services, and pursue legislative efforts and rights advocacy. Among other programs, Arc sponsors the STEP program (Support and Training for Exceptional Parents) to provide training, information, and assistance to parents of children, age 22 and under, who qualify for special education. The Arc publishes a quarterly newsletter, "The Arc Connection," providing members with schedules of events, workshops, conference, and meetings. For just $10 a year, volunteers can join in the Arc's efforts to ensure quality services to all disabled people in Tennessee. Those interested or wishing to volunteer can call (615) 321-5699.--Jocelyn Morneau
